End of Year Party - Gypsy Night
24/12/2007 - Images © ACP

With their eye ever on the future, ACP staff and volunteers got out their crystal balls and tarot cards for an evening of gypsy cabaret and fortune telling. With Gallery 3 transformed for the night into Romany encampment, violin and accordion rang out as party-goers danced to the music of Lolo Lovina. Psychic Dee gave readings, the sangria flowed and another fabulous year at the Australian Centre for Photography was celebrated... all in the best possible taste.

Happy Holidays to one and all!

Thursday 15 November. Our summer season was launched with a combined opening for Girl Parade and Peacock Variations. Girl Parade was the final show curated by Bec Dean for the ACP. Girl Parade looks at the new wave of feminism by Australian and international photomedia artists, and the opening included a performance referencing the aussie lifesaver; Heart of Gold 5, choreographed by Pilar Mata Dupont and Tarryn Gill.

Peacock Variations, curated by Alasdair Foster, was conceived as a counterpoint to Girl Parade, and took a look back at men's fashion in Australia from the 60's through to the eighties. Many of the works in the show were on loan from photographers who were early supporters of the ACP

Mirror Worlds shines at Auckland Festival
12/03/2007 - Text Elisabeth Stanton

The cover of the Auckland Festival's visual arts guide stands-out with the video still from Chen Shaoxiong's Anti-terrorism Variety for the ACP (Australian Centre for Photography) and IMA's (Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane) co-produced exhibition Mirror Worlds. Bearing an uncanny relationship to Auckland's high-tech skyline - which boasts Sky Tower, the tallest built structure in the southern hemisphere - Chen Shaoxiong's image of Shanghai's Oriental Pearl Tower deflecting the movement of an incoming plane is still as confronting today as it was when he made the work in 2002.

The exhibition's premiere on Wednesday 7 March at new commercial art space, Two Rooms in Auckland is a major event for exhibition curators Zoe Butt (Queensland Art Gallery) and Bec Dean (Australian Centre for Photography) as they are joined by two of the exhibiting artists, Junebum Park from Korea and Wit Pimkanchanapong from Thailand. The artists and curators will be interviewed on New Zealand's TV2 before the opening, giving a special preview to the seven different video-based works by artists from across Asia.

Due to the exhibition's promotion as the cover of the festival guide, it is expected that a large audience will attend the opening and the exhibition season which continues until Saturday 14 April.
