If you go down to the woods today you're sure for a
big surprise
Sydney artist James Gulliver Hancock, whilst on a
residency in Austria in early 2007, stumbled into
the Viennese Woods and discovered that he had
magical abilities that his normal suburban
upbringing had never quite brought to light. This
led to a series of video works in which he travels
to Woods around the globe, discovering his many
other hidden talents
Except that these talents clearly amounted to
a knack for cheap video-editing trickery, and the
only other Wood he has visited so far was
Centennial Park on a gloomy winter's day. And when
you think about it, his desire to discover hidden
magical talents probably has more to do with the
way Australians in foreign countries,
self-conscious about their cultural shallowness,
try to ingratiate themselves with the locals by
wearing a kaftan, or eating fried eyeballs or
whatever.
James Gulliver Hancock is also exhibiting other
work from his recent international travels at
Sheffer Gallery in Chippendale from 6-27
October.
