This led to a series of video works in which he travels to Woods around the globe, discovering his many other hidden talents… …Except that these talents clearly amounted to a knack for cheap video-editing trickery, and the only other Wood he has visited so far was Centennial Park on a gloomy winter's day. And when you think about it, his desire to discover hidden magical talents probably has more to do with the way Australians in foreign countries, self-conscious about their cultural shallowness, try to ingratiate themselves with the locals by wearing a kaftan, or eating fried eyeballs or whatever. James Gulliver Hancock is also exhibiting other work from his recent international travels at Sheffer Gallery in Chippendale from 6-27 October.
