With its tongue-in-cheek title referring to
girlhood pageants and beauty competitions, Girl
Parade gathers a host of Australian and
International women artists and collaborations
exploring female experience across the gamut of
personal and social issues through portraiture,
performance, costume and self-representation.
This young generation of artists working in
photomedia and video explore themes and ideas
following the threads of feminist discourse at its
height: the commodification and use of women's
bodies in advertising and propaganda, social
standing and power, vocational aspirations and
realities, the trials of motherhood, the complexity
of sexuality and desire, and ageing as it relates
to the maintenance of physical beauty and
respect.
