The Australian Centre for Photography is proud to present the sixth Nikon Award for ACP Student of the Year.

The Nikon Prize for ACP Student of the Year is offered for the best single image submitted by a student who has taken a course in ACP Creative Learning over the preceding year. ACP Creative Learning is a unique community, and this award celebrates the simple passion for photography that is at its heart. Over 1000 students take classes at the ACP every year, learning everything from basic camera craft to advanced skills such as fashion, portraiture and architectural photography. All students, be they beginner or established practitioner, are encouraged to enter an image into the competition for the prestigious Nikon Award.

This year's 24 finalists are on show in the ACP foyer until 18 January 2004. They were selected by ACP Director Alasdair Foster and John Swainston, Managing Director of Maxwell Optical Industries (who distribute Nikon equipment in Australia). The Judges selecting the winning works were State Library of NSW Curator of Photography Alan Davies, Sydney Morning Herald Good Weekend Photo Editor Judith Overell, and photomedia artist Robyn Stacey.

Matt Hoyle won first prize with his evocative portrait. He won a Nikon F100 camera (valued at over $3,000) "This is a compelling image, both in its composition and in the intensity of the subject's gaze. The restricted tonal range is effective and evocative, repeating the cool blue of the sea in the subject's eyes. The photograph makes you want to know about the man. Who is he?" [from artist's statement]: "Bondi Icebergs - John"

Anna Harris was the runner-up with a poetic street photograph. She won a voucher for Nikon products to the value of $1,500. The judges commented "This subdued, almost monochromatic use of colour creates a moody autumnal image. There is an interesting juxtaposition of movement and quiet that is created between the abstract geometry of the road markings and the fleeting figure. Paradoxically, the image conveys information through the absence of detail. A subtle image that rewards closer examination."
