The Photo Technica Award for Australian Photo-Artist of the Year is presented to the best work submitted by an emerging Australian artist (an artist who has trained but not yet received a solo exhibition in a public space or secured representation by a dealer).

Twelve finalists have been selected from 240 entries made by emerging photographic artists from across Australia. Alisa Bunbury, Curator of Prints and Drawings at the National Gallery of Victoria, and ACP's Program Manager Robyn Johnston, curated the finalists' exhibition. The exhibition offers a unique indicator of current trends and sensibilities in Australian photo-based art and is on display until 22 December.

The Judges selecting the prize winners were: Judith Blackall, Head of Artistic Programs, Museum of Contemporary Art, Malcolm Watt, Art Director of Vogue Australia and the editor of doingbird, and Alasdair Foster, Director of the ACP.

The judges commented on the exceptionally high quality of the work in the exhibition, which had made choosing only one winner and one runner-up a "nightmare experience"!

Winner of the Photo Technica Award 2002 was Sarah Smuts Kennedy

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy from NSW won the Photo Technica Award her baroque inspired portraits of men. In selecting the work the judges commented that they were: struck by the elegant handling of contemporary subjects within an art historical aesthetic. There is a simplicity and warmth in these images which suggests real empathy for the subject and a quiet gravity, which moves independently of the trends and styles of the moment.

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy is currently in rehearsal for the play Blind City and the Two Up Series on during the Sydney Festival. She is also writing a feature screen play and waiting to her about funding for her first short film.

Runner-up of the Photo Technica Award was David Lawrey

David Lawrey from NSW received the runner-up prize for his constructed interiors which invite the viewer to question the way in which they see and experience their immediate environment.

The judges found these, purposeful and intriguing images. They suggest the anonymity of corporate spaces and mass-market housing, whilst clearly being models complete with all the imperfections of scale and surface. The tension between these two dynamics is brought to life through a clever handling of artificial light and space.

David Lawrey is currently finishing his honours degree in visual arts at the Sydney College of the Arts. The awards were presented by Yahoo Serious, Cult Film Director, Producer, Writer and Actor.
