The Nikon Prize for ACP Student of the Year is
offered for the best single image submitted by a
student who has taken a course in ACP Creative Learning
over the preceding year. Over 900 people take
courses at the ACP annually, in subjects ranging
from basic camera craft to specialist couses such
as documentary, portraiture or architectural
photography.
The 25 finalists are on show in the ACP foyer until
22 December. They were selected by John
Swainston, Managing Director of Maxwell Optical
Industries (who distribute Nikon equipment in
Australia) and ACP Director, Alasdair
Foster.
The selectors had been very impressed by the
sustained excellence of the entries this year. Many
were of a standard equal to that of established
professional photographers and it was a credit to
the quality of the teaching at ACP and the energy
and application of the students that such vivid and
engaging images were being produced.
The Judges selecting the winning works were
Karyn Ashlin Marketing & Communications
Manager for Maxwell Optical Industries representing
Nikon Cameras, Michael Wardell, Curatorial
Services Coordinator Art Gallery of New South
Wales, and Stephanie Strange Picture Editor
Sydney Morning Herald Good Weekend.
Bruce York won first prize with his
evocative black and white street scene
(Untitled 2002). He won a Nikon F100 camera
(valued at over $3,000).
The Judges said of the winning work:This image
seduces us with its beautiful light and strong
composition, while at the same time reminding us of
the lonely bubble we all live in walking city
streets. The happiness of the "poster girl"
contrasts with the bleak isolation of the workers
with their dark clothing, bowed heads and down-cast
eye. Extremely well done both technically and
creatively.
Martine Perret was the runner-up with a
black and white image taken in East Timor the day
after Independence. She won a voucher for Nikon
products to the value of $1,500.
The Judges said: This image captures the
innocence and exuberance of childhood as your eye
explores the details of this image. The joyful,
frenetic action is well conveyed by inventive
cropping and fast shutter speed. An obvious
talent.
The awards were presented by Karyn
Ashlin representing Nikon in Australia.
