This ravishing new exhibition of floral
photographs meditates upon the image of the flower
as an inspiration for eight contemporary Australian
photo-artists. Playing on the medieval exhortation
memento mori, "remember you will die", the works in
the show penetrate the allegorical depths of
flowers as emblems of mortality. Donnelly and Reich
pay homage to nineteenth century botanical studies
by capturing the complex structure and lyrical
nature of both indigenous and exotic flora in the
sensual surface of their prints. Cornish's
cyanotypes produce a disquieting blue hue that
envelops the viewer in their velvety texture. One
can scent the transient nature of life hidden in
the dark seduction of MacDonald's Victorian framed
Petal series. In contrast the muted tones and
pixels of Parkers contemporary series Mechanical
Heart find pleasure in the digitisation of the
macro image.
Campbell's richly coloured digital prints are
otherworldly in their abstracted aesthetic. Clay
and Ferman's conceptual works are totems that
contemplate the design and architecture of the
natural world. Softly elegiac and subtly profound,
the images in this exhibition will capture your
emotions with their exquisite beauty and
bittersweet poetry.
