Throughout its history the pursuit of
photographic detail has been both a scientific and
a cultural obsession. This exhibition explores the
work of artists who resist that obsession. In their
work, potent but minimal gestures, rhythms and
tonalities suggest ideas that capture the
imagination.
Whilst minimalism in photography enjoyed something
of a vogue in the context of eighties
conceptualism, it continues to fascinate a number
of younger contemporary practitioners today. The
exhibition brings together recent work by nine
Australian photo-artists. It draws on established
minimalists such as Christine Cornish and Simone
Douglas, showing alongside new-generation
practitioners including Danielle Thompson and
Martha Yoo, and cross-media artists Scott Redford
and Marco Masci. Featuring a surprising diversity
of styles and approach, this presentation explores
the breadth of minimalist practice whilst situating
it within the broader arts through comparison with
music.
