Cloud & Empire

4 August - 3 September, 2000

Tue - Sun: 11.00am - 6.00pm
Gallery One

Michael Riley

Cloud is a new body of work investigating Michael Riley's enforced Christian upbringing and the wider impact of such upbringing on Indigenous communities throughout Australia. The work addresses processes of assimilation: the removing of Indigenous peoples onto reserves to 'die out' and the imposed conversion to Christianity.

Recognising both negative and positive outcomes of his upbringing, Cloud seeks to make sense of a history that defies simple resolution.

Empire is the acclaimed and evocative 1997 film directed by Riley for The Festival of the Dreaming, with music by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

Gundang Ngaya Burbala (I'll Come at Night)

Gallery Two

Christian Bumbarra Thompson

Christian Bumbarra Thompson is an indigenous Australian of mixed race lineage - a 'Bulardu' or person of two bloods. His work explores an identity which sits on the cusp, spanning two cultures. Part performance, part photography his images are informed by both the conscious and unconscious aspects of his dreaming.

Gundang Ngaya Burbala depicts private, nocturnal ceremonies performed by the artist. While they draw upon the imagery of the Bidjara people of southwest Queensland, they are located within the city - reflecting the artist's identity as an urban dwelling Aboriginal person.
