Every Day - 11th Biennale of Sydney

November, 1998

Tue - Sun: 11.00am - 6.00pm
Galleries One and Two

Roni Horn

The ACP is a core venue for the 11th Biennale of Sydney, the southern hemisphere's major festival of contemporary art this year concentrating on art and the every day. Artistic Director Jonathan Watkins has brought together an event of great scope involving 101 artists from 28 countries and encompassing 10 venues across central Sydney.

The ACP is hosting a new suite of photographs by celebrated New York - based artist Roni Horn. For many years Roni Horn has regularly visited Iceland working on a series of books entitled To Place. In recent years she has produced gallery-based photographic work from these visits, most notably You are the Weather, 1994-96, a series of multiple portrait images of a woman outdoors, in water, staring directly at the camera. Roni Horn's new suite of colour photographs - based on a formal use of the arctic circle as metaphor - being exhibited for the first time internationally at the ACP evolve again from her ongoing relationship with Iceland and a fascination with photography as a means of access to both the meticulous details of and metaphysical departures from every day life.

Foyer

Grazia Toderi and Richard Venlet

The ACP is also featuring a new video projection work by Italian artist Grazia Toderi entitled Natanel '63 (Born in 1963) in which "a doll dressed in red is shown spinning round and round while behind her a television screen shows footage of the Apollo 11 lunar landing. The home made figures and objects are an allusion to childhood fantasies and the capacity for dreaming up other worlds." (Rosa Martinez)

Finally, the ACP video foyer space will feature one component of Belgium artist Richard Venlet's multi-site mapping of Sydney city from afar.
